Looking for a perfect family day out that combines wild nature, amazing animals, and hands-on learning? South London offers two incredible destinations that are perfect for curious kids and nature-loving parents — the wild South Norwood Country Park and the wonderful Horniman Museum & Gardens.
Part 1: The Wild Adventure — South Norwood Country Park
125 acres of real countryside, right on your doorstep
If your family loves exploring, getting muddy, and discovering nature in a truly wild setting, South Norwood Country Park is your perfect destination. This 125-acre nature reserve is less of a manicured park and more of a slice of real countryside, right on your doorstep.
A Haven for Butterflies
In the summer months, the wildflower meadows are the best place to spot some of the 20+ species of butterfly that call the park home. Look for the distinctive Peacock with its stunning eyespots, the bright orange Comma, and the common but beautiful Speckled Wood fluttering in the sunny glades. The Friends of the Park have a handy butterfly spotter sheet you can download to help your kids identify what they see.
Birdwatching for the Whole Family
South Norwood Country Park is officially Croydon's premier birdwatching site, with an incredible 177 different bird species recorded over the years. It's the perfect place to introduce your kids to the excitement of birdwatching.
- The Main Lake: You are almost guaranteed to see Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Egyptian Geese, Coots, and Moorhens. A fun challenge for kids: Coots are all black with a white face shield, while Moorhens have a red and yellow beak.
- Kestrel: The park has a resident pair of these beautiful falcons. Look for them hovering expertly over the meadows as they hunt for small mammals.
- Grey Heron: A majestic, prehistoric-looking bird often seen standing motionless at the water's edge, hunting for fish.
- Kingfisher: For the patient and lucky! A flash of electric blue is the most you'll often see of this stunning bird as it dives for fish in the streams.
- Green Woodpecker: Listen for its laughing call (known as a "yaffle") or the "drumming" of the Great Spotted Woodpecker against a tree trunk.
- Winter Visitors: In the colder months, look for flocks of Redwing and Fieldfare, thrushes that visit from Scandinavia.
Evening Bat Walks
For a truly magical experience with older children, join one of the evening bat walks organised by the Friends of the Park. Using special detectors, you can listen to the bats' secret calls as they hunt over the lake at sunset. It's a thrilling and educational adventure that kids won't forget.
Cost: Completely free!
What to Bring: Wellies (it can get muddy!), binoculars for birdwatching, a picnic blanket, and your spotter sheets.
Getting There: Main entrance on Albert Road, SE25 4QL. Nearest tram stops: Arena and Harrington Road.

Part 2: The Tropical Experience — Horniman Museum & Gardens
A guaranteed wildlife encounter whatever the weather
For a guaranteed wildlife encounter whatever the weather, the Horniman Museum in nearby Forest Hill is a must-visit. While the museum itself is fantastic, the real stars for a family wildlife day are the Butterfly House and the Animal Walk.
The Magical Butterfly House
Step inside a tropical paradise and be surrounded by hundreds of free-flying butterflies. This is the Horniman's star attraction for a reason. It's warm, lush, and filled with beautiful, colourful butterflies that will fly right past you and may even land on you! You can see the full life cycle, from chrysalis to butterfly, and learn about different species from around the world.
The Animal Walk & Gardens
After the butterflies, head outside to the Animal Walk, where you can meet alpacas, goats, sheep, and chickens. It's a lovely, free-to-access area that gives kids a taste of the farm in the city. The 16.5 acres of Gardens are also perfect for a run-around, a picnic, or exploring the different themed areas like the Sunken Garden and the Dye Garden.
Don't Forget the Aquarium!
Also at the Horniman is a fantastic Aquarium, showcasing aquatic life from around the globe. From jellyfish to tiny frogs, it's another great way to get up close with the natural world.
Cost: Museum and Gardens are free. Butterfly House and Aquarium require paid tickets — book timed tickets online in advance, especially during school holidays.
Facilities: Café, toilets, baby change, and buggy park (no buggies inside the Butterfly House).
Getting There: 10–15 minute walk from Forest Hill station, or served by several bus routes.
